After an unhappy childhood, she inherited a fortune in 1902. She was a portrait painter, based mainly in Paris and Capri. She lived with (and painted) her partner, the writer Natalie Barney for over 50 years.
Her subtle, low toned painting reveal the influence of Whistler, Conder and Sickert. She is noted for her portraits of women, often in masculine dress. At some time - possibly at some time between 1905 and 1920 - she owned Violet and Blue: The Red Feather y503
