Frederick Edwin Church was a painter of rugged landscape and stormy coastal scenes.
Church is best known for Niagara (1857; Washington, DC, Corcoran Gallery of Art), his monumentally detailed view of Niagara Falls. Inspired by remote and inaccessible landscapes, he made several trips to polar regions to paint.
