He married Emelia Jessie Campbell, and they lived at 19 Park Circus in Glasgow and then in baronial splendour in Solsgirth House. His son William joined him in business.
A collector, who had made his fortune in pig-iron, he was based first in Glasgow and then London. His collection included works by Edward Burne Jones, Edward Poynter, Frederick Sandys, Roddam Spencer Stanhope, Fernand Knopff and Adolphe Monticelli as well as a few Old Masters, and one Whistler, Symphony in Silver and Grey y146. His portrait was painted by Albert Moore in 1877 and hangs in York Art Gallery.
