William Turner Dannat was an artist who specialised in portrait, figure and still life painting.
In 1885 Dannat became a member of the Society of British Artists, a society which elected Whistler its President in June 1886. Dannat exhibited at the society's 62nd Annual Exhibition in 1885, and also exhibited from this date until 1893 at the Royal Academy and the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
In 1885 Whistler asked Dannat to vote for the election of Mortimer Menpes to the SBA (#11021). Whistler's letters give the impression that the two men enjoyed a good relationship (#00607). However, in a letter of 1891 Whistler complained of Dannat's painting, hung next to his Crepuscule in Flesh Colour and Green: Valparaiso y073 at , that it had taken on the 'Impressionist analines' with 'mauve and ultramarine running into the huge legs of his Spaniard' (#06591).
