Sebastien-Paul Gallimard was a collector, publisher, philanthropist and patron of the arts and music.
Life:
Gallimard studied architecture under Daumet at the École des Beaux Arts and painting under Barillot. He collected works by artists ranging from the Old Masters to Corot, Degas, Manet and Utrillo. The Gallimard publishing house produced many fine editions including an edition of Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du mal (1888) that was illustrated by his friend Auguste Rodin. He also published the Goncourt brothers’ Germaine Lacertaux with an introduction by Geoffroy and illustrations by Raffaelli. His son Gaston, founded a French publishing empire, Gallimard Editions.
