She was the daughter of William L. and Susan Vaughan Clayton. In 1927 she married Houston Attorney Wilmer St. John Garwood, who later served as a Justice of the Texas Supreme Court from 1948 to 1959. They had one son, Judge William Lockhart Garwood (1931 - 2011); he and his wife Merle had two children, Will Garwood Jr and Mary Garwood (Mrs Yancy).

Life:

She graduated magna cum laude from Smith College, and in later life received a M. A. degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She was a writer and philanthropist.
