Gibson was a graphic artist. He married Irene Langhorne, who, with her sisters, inspired may of his drawings of beautiful women, the iconic 'Gibson Girls'.
He published his illustrations in Life magazine, and later became its editor and owner. His work appeared in books and other major magazines including Harper's Weekly, Scribners and Collier's.
