Identity:

Hokusai was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period, creator of some of the most iconic images of all time, including The Great Wave off Kanagawa, the first in his series 36 Views of Mount Fuji (1830s).

Life:

Several of Whistler's etchings, including Old Battersea Bridge [188], paintings such as Nocturne: Blue and Gold - Old Battersea Bridge y140, and the Blue and Silver: Screen, with Old Battersea Bridge y139 are thought to have been influenced by Hokusai's woodcuts including his Mannenbashi Bridge at Fukagawa from the series of Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji (1830s) as one of many such influences.
