Identity:

The son of immigrant English parents who settled in Utica but moved thereafter to New York, he married Jane Riker O'Brien.

Life:

He was a portrait, genre, and landscape painter. He was the first vice president, and later President, of the National Academy of Design.

A portrait of Whistler's father George Washington Whistler, by Inman, said to have been painted about 1843, is in Cincinnati Art Museum. The following year he spent in England.
