He was an art dealer, collector and gallery director, who established Dublin's Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, and made major contributions to the visual arts in Ireland, including the Lane Bequest. He was drowned on the Lusitania in 1915.
A painting by Whistler, The Artist's Studio y062, was given by Sir Hugh Lane in his initial gift towards the foundation of the Dublin Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, known as The Hugh Lane.
