Will Hicok Low was a mural and genre painter, designer and illustrator, and the secretary of the Society of American Art.
Low studied under the sculptor E. D. Palmer, and in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérome and Charles Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran. He exhibited at the Paris Salons of 1876 and 1877, returning to America in 1877. In 1877 he sent work to the National Academy and in 1878 to the Exposition Universelle. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1890.
As a member of the Soliciting Committee of the American Art Society, Low was in contact with collectors of Whistler's work in 1903 regarding an exhibition of the American Art Society in New York.
