Daniel J. Terra, Cultural Ambassador for the United States, was a scientist, businessman and collector. He founded a printing-chemical firm, Lawter Chemicals, a major producer of printing inks and chemicals.
He married, first, the artist Adeline Evans Richards, and secondly, Judith Banks (1986-1996).
He owned many fine American works including etchings, drawings and paintings by Whistler. He founded the Terra Foundation for American Art in 1978 and the Terra Museum of American Art in Chicago in 1980. The Terra Museum of Art in Giverny was founded as an exhibition and research centre. After his death the museum in Chicago closed and was merged with the Art Institute of Chicago.
