Walter Winans was a painter and sculptor, the son of William L. Winans and a relation of Whistler's by marriage. Born in Russia where his father worked for the firm of Harrison, Winans and Eastwick in St Petersburg, he seems to have lived periodically in London where his family later settled.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and elsewhere between 1894 and 1920.
