Charles Louis Philippe Zilcken was an etcher, painter and writer on art.
Zilcken studied in The Hague under J. C. K. Klinkenberg (1852-1924) and Anton Mauve (1838-1888). He spent much of his life in The Hague where his favoured subjects were still-lifes, land and townscapes. He is perhaps best known as a graphic artist, particularly through his reproductive etchings after Dutch seventeenth century masters and he is considered an important figure in the Dutch etching revival
He was known as a writer on art, and was editor of the journal Elseviers Geïllustreerd Maandschrift from 1896-1905.
Zilcken certainly knew Whistler by 1889 when he invited Whistler to contribute to the Nederlandsche Etsclub exhibition (#04260).
