Anders Leonard Zorn was Swedish painter, etcher and sculptor.

Zorn spent his early career painting watercolour portraits and genre scenes but left Sweden in 1881 to pursue his studies abroad. He spent time in London and Paris (where he came into contact with Japonisme and Impressionist painting) and also travelled all over Europe including the Balkans.

During the later 1880s Zorn turned to oil painting and became known for his nudes in plein air settings and for his portraits. He painted many portraits of famous sitters including Whistler's patron Isabella Stewart Gardner (1894; Boston, MA, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum). In 1898, he was invited to exhibit with the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers during Whistler's presidency.
