• 1946: acquired by William Maxwell Reekie (1849-1948) in 1946.
• 1982: sold at auction, Ambleside, Mossop, 5 November 1982 (lot 140) as 'a coastal scene with figures walking on a beach' bought by the Trafalgar Galleries, London, for Hirschl & Adler, New York dealers;
• 1985: at auction, Christie's, London, 15 March 1985 (lot 19, repr.) as 'Figures on a Beach near Cliffs', bought in;
• 1985/1986: bought by W. Wiltshire, London dealer, and sent to the Coe Kerr Gallery, New York;
• 1987: sold at auction, Christie's, New York, 4 December 1987 (lot 199) as 'On the Beach, Hastings', bought by a private collector.
