A design for the hallway at the house of Frederick Richards Leyland (1832-1892) in 49 Prince's Gate, London. One of the panels is reproduced above.
On the wall at right is a full-length painting of a woman with a large parasol, which does not represent any known painting. The composition is similar to that in several drawings, including A Chinese lady with a parasol [M.0459], and two later drawings, Design for a Mosaic [M.1226] and The Japanese Dress [M.1227]. These are thought to be related to designs for a Gold Girl [M.0461], which was first mentioned in 1872: a subject to which, it appears, Whistler repeatedly returned. 1
See MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 577).
1: Merrill 1998 [more], pp. 183-84; Merrill suggests the painting was suggested by La Princesse du pays de la porcelaine [YMSM 050], but that does not include the prominent parasol.
