Peacock designs; (a) feathers on panel; (b) plan of ceiling; (c) feathers on panels; (d) feathers on panels and ceiling coffers

Provenance

There is some doubt about the early provenance. The Pennells reproduced it as either in the Estate of Frances Leyland (1834-1910) or owned by Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840-1924). 1 The latter suggestion is incorrect but it is possible that it was acquired from Mrs Leyland by Alexander or from her estate by his family.

Exhibitions

Not exhibited in Whistler's life time.

Notes:

1: Pennell 1921C [more], repr. f.p. 104 and f.p. 105.
