San Giorgio Maggiore stands on an island south of Venice, dominating the view south from the Riva degli Schiavoni. It takes its name from the Benedictine monastery founded in the l0th century. The monastery was suppressed in the l9th century and turned into a barracks. The church, designed by Palladio, was begun in 1566, and completed after his death, in 1610.
