  • 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
  • 1958: bequeathed to the University of Glasgow;
  • 1968: de-accessioned and acquired by Ira Spanierman (n/a), New York dealer, in part-exchange for Copy after Ingres's 'Roger délivrant Angélique' [YMSM 011], May 1968;
  • After 1968: sold to Davis & Long, New York dealers;
  • After 1968: bought by Paul Mellon (1907-1999);
  • 1993: Paul Mellon Collection, Yale Center for British Art.
