Woman in a dress with a long train, The Hunterian

Although this sketch, with its element of caricature, resembles some costume studies by Beatrice Philip (Mrs E. W. Godwin, Mrs J. McN. Whistler) (1857-1896) in the Hunterian, it is also related to drawings by Whistler. Whether by James or Beatrice Whistler, the drawing shows the convergence of their styles in subjects of mutual interest, such as fashion. Beatrice Whistler frequently used a broad nib such as was used here, but it is by no means exceptional in Whistler's work.
