Fireplace was drawn on the verso of a letter draft by Whistler that probably dates from 1892, possibly between 18 September and 30 October. 1

It was catalogued in MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 1348) as by J. McN. Whistler, though with justified reservations. The entry has now been amended.

Notes:

1: GUW #07443, where dated '[November 1888/1893]'. However, this definitely dates from after the Whistler's move to Paris in 1892.
