Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death, and bequeathed to his ward and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
• 1956: bought by Colnaghi's, London art dealers, 25 June, and sold on 13 July to a private collector;
• 1959: bought by Colnaghi's on 20 May and sold on 26 June to another private collector;
• By 1995: passed by family descent to a private collection.
