Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1955: sold on 25 June to Colnaghi's, London art dealers;
• 1957: bought on 2 August by a private collector;
• Date unknown: given to a private collector;
• 1987-1991: on deposit at the Houghton Library, Harvard University.
