According to the Pennells, Frederick Richards Leyland (1832-1892) commissioned paintings of all his four children, but ‘The son, after three sittings, refused to sit again.' 2 Whistler made a pastel sketch of the boy about 1873, Frederick Leyland seated [M.0508], but even that is not fully realised.
