Only one title has been suggested:
A pastel drawing by Whistler, Frederick Leyland seated [M.0508], shows him lounging in a chair. 2 It is not known if this was related to the oil, nor what became of the incomplete portrait.
Frederick Dawson Leyland (1856-1916), the son of Frances Leyland (1834-1910) and Frederick Richards Leyland (1832-1892). He married Sybil Lake Beadle in 1880 in Kensington, London. He succeeded his father in his shipping business in 1888. 3
