The canvas, of medium-coarse weave, is roughly equivalent to the French 'toile de 12' (46 x 61cm) in size. It was painted with long strokes of a wide brush, the paint rather thick, except for the thin paint dripping over the solitary figure. This figure was added in black after the background had dried.
1878: the style and whereabouts of the original frame (s) are unknown.
1892: reframed by Frederick Henry Grau (1859-1892) for Whistler's Goupil exhibition of 1892.
ca 1930: reframed by M. Grieve, Flat Whistler style.
