  • 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
  • 1934: given by Miss Birnie Philip to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

  • 1886: 'Notes' - 'Harmonies' - 'Nocturnes', Second Series, Messrs Dowdeswell, London, 1886 (cat. no. 4) as 'Blue and brown – Westgate, the Moors'.

The Globe commented:

'In some cases Mr. Whistler has succeeded, with very little apparent labour, in giving a vivid impression of natural effect – in the water-colour sketch, "Morning in Dutch Waters," for instance, and in the study in "Blue and Brown - Westgate, the Moors" '. 1
