Nocturne in Black and Gold probably dates from 1876 and was first exhibited in that year, at the 12th Exhibition, Society of French Artists, Deschamps Gallery, London, 1876 (cat. no. 150). 1
Possible candidates for exhibits under this title in 1876 include Cremorne, No. 1 [YMSM 163] and Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Gardens [YMSM 166]. It is less likely that it was Nocturne: Black and Gold - The Fire Wheel [YMSM 169] or Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket [YMSM 170]. It could well have been Nocturne in Black and Gold: Entrance to Southampton Water [YMSM 179]. All date from the mid 1870s.
