It is a view north along the Fondamenta de l'Arzere to the campo by the church of Santa Marta. This was a poor fishing quarter, between the Piazzale Roma and the Zattere, in Venice, Italy. 1 It was not, as Whistler originally called it, 'Martin', a fact that was pointed out in the newspapers, and gleefully dismissed as irrelevant by Whistler. 2
