Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
• 1943: sold to Colnaghi's, London art dealers, but returned to Miss Birnie Philip.
• 1989: sold at auction, Sotheby's, New York, 24 May 1989 (lot 140) as 'Grey and Pink, a Draped Model with a Fan', and bought by a private collector, Charles C. Hermanowski (d. 2010);
• 2000: sold at auction, Sotheby's, New York, 24 May 2000 (lot 53).

Exhibitions

• 1889: “Notes” – “Harmonies” – “Nocturnes”, H. Wunderlich & Co., New York, 1889 (cat. no. 59) as 'Flesh Colour and Red'.

It was priced at 80 guineas in 1889, but remained unsold, and was returned to Whistler after the exhibition by Wunderlich's on the SS Servia. 1
