Detail from The Canal, Amsterdam, 1889, James McNeill Whistler, The Hunterian, University of Glasgow

Scene in the market, Algiers

Provenance

  • 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death, and bequeathed to his ward and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
  • 1955: sold on 26 October to Colnaghi's, London art dealers;
  • 1956: bought on 3 July 1956 by George E. Dix (1912-1999), art dealer with Durlacher Bros, New York.

It is possible that the provenance of this drawing is incorrect, and it is in fact Scene in the Market, Algiers [M.1646].
