Provenance

  • 1938: possibly sold at auction, Robinson and Fisher's, London, 7 April 1938 (lot 25) as 'View in Venice, looking towards the Molo', and bought by Colnaghi's, London art dealers;
  • 1939: sold on 28 August to Carroll Carstairs (1889-1948), New York art dealer.
  • 1943: sold from the collection of James Carstairs, Ardmore, PA, at Parke-Bernet, New York, 22 May 1943 (lot 126, repr.) as 'View across the lagoon', and bought by 'Harold Carstairs';
  • 1944: bought by Macbeth, New York dealers, and sold in January 1944 to Robert Hudson Tannahill (1893-1969), of Detroit, and Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan.
  • Before 1967: acquired by Ernest Carlton Kanzler (1892-1967), Detroit;
  • 1969: sold from his estate, at Parke-Bernet, New York, 21 May 1969 (lot 83) and bought by a private collector;
  • 1990: sold at auction, Sotheby Parke-Bernet, New York, 24 May 1990 (lot 122), and bought by a collector in Florida.
  • 2000: sold at auction, Sotheby's, 24 May 2000 (lot 87).
  • 2012: with Peter Nahum, Leicester Galleries, London.

The early provenance is unknown and there are gaps in the later provenance.

Exhibitions

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
