Detail from The Canal, Amsterdam, 1889, James McNeill Whistler, The Hunterian, University of Glasgow

Rose and Red: The Little Pink Cap

Provenance

  • 1894: sold by Whistler to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) ;
  • 1919: bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art.

Details are given in MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 1277).

Exhibitions

  • 1903: Seventy-second Annual Exhibition, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, 1903 (cat. no. 2).
  • 1904: Oil Paintings, Water Colors, Pastels and Drawings: Memorial Exhibition of the Works of Mr. J. McNeill Whistler, Copley Society, Boston, 1904 (cat. no. 130) as 'Rose and Red. The little Pink Cap'.
  • 1905: Œuvres de James McNeill Whistler, Palais de l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1905 (cat. no. 144) as 'Rose and Red. The little Pink Cap'.

It is just possible, if this pastel dates from a year or two earlier, that it was Red and Pink [M.1207], which was exhibited in “Notes” – “Harmonies” – “Nocturnes”, H. Wunderlich & Co., New York, 1889 (cat. no. 60).

By the terms of Freer's will, this work cannot be lent to another venue.
