Detail from The Canal, Amsterdam, 1889, James McNeill Whistler, The Hunterian, University of Glasgow

r.: Colour schemes for the decoration of Aubrey House; v.: Head and shoulders of a nude

Provenance

  • 1903: possibly in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) , or returned to Miss Birnie Philip after Whistler's death;
  • 1958: bequeathed by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.

It is possible that it was among drawings returned to Miss Philip by William Cleverly Alexander (1840-1916).

Exhibitions

There is no record of an exhibition in Whistler's lifetime.
