Nocturnal note: Venice

Provenance

  • 1880: given by Whistler to Otto Henry Bacher (1856-1909) ;
  • 1910: sold at auction, AAA, New York, 2 March 1910 (lot 166) as 'Nocturnal Note: Venice'.
  • 1920: bought from Albert Eugene Gallatin (1882-1952) New York, by Knoedler's, New York dealers, and sold to Charles B. Eddy (1872-1951) , Plainfield, NJ, in March (#WC1379 and 1470) but returned;
  • 1921: on 26 July, Colnaghi, London dealers, took half shares in the drawing;
  • 1928: bought by Charles Sessler (1854-1935) , dealer, Philadelphia, who sold it to Lessing Julius Rosenwald (1891-1971) in December 1928;
  • 1943: given to the National Gallery of Art, but still housed with the Rosenwald Collection at Alverthorpe;
  • 1980: moved to the National Gallery of Art.

Exhibitions

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
