Detail from The Canal, Amsterdam, 1889, James McNeill Whistler, The Hunterian, University of Glasgow

Venise

Provenance

Unknown. It is possible that one of these was a pastel that was at one time in a French collection, Fish Market, San Barnaba [M.0761], but given the number of pastels with an incomplete provenance, this is by no means certain.

Exhibitions

  • 1889: Exposition Universelle, Champs de Mars, Paris, 1889.

The Journal des Arts, 12 May 1889, described them only as 'plus soignées' (elegant), which is not enough to identify them.
