This was a design for Whistler's monogram, a butterfly, to be embroidered on the valance for the rooms of Messrs Dowdeswell for Whistler's exhibition, 'Notes' - 'Harmonies' - 'Nocturnes', Messrs Dowdeswell, London, 1884.
