Detail from The Canal, Amsterdam, 1889, James McNeill Whistler, The Hunterian, University of Glasgow

Modèle nu, debout, passant une robe

Sitter

It has been suggested that this was a model nicknamed 'Tootsie' (name unknown) (fl. 1900) and that she may have been, in fact, the young Carmen Rossi (fl. 1880/1901) . 1 'Tootsie' was so named by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), writing on a watercolour, The Pink Cap [M.1308], and on an impression of the lithograph Draped Figure, Standing c046.
