  • 1903: sold on 8 May by Whistler to Richard Albert Canfield (1855-1914) , Providence, RI;
  • 1914: sold to Knoedler's, New York art dealers, March 1914;
  • 1920: bought by Col. H. D. G. Hughes, Philadelphia, 20 August.
  • 1942: sold by the Kleeman Galleries to Knoedler's, 27 October 1942;
  • 1942: bought by George A. Martin (1864-1944) , Cleveland, OH, in October 1942;
  • 1944: probably bequeathed to his widow, Mrs George A. Martin (dates unknown) ;
  • 1946: sold at auction, Sotheby Parke-Bernet, New York, lot 304), and bought by Babcock Galleries, New York art dealers;
  • Date unknown: passed on commission to Macbeth, New York art dealers.
  • By 1960: owned by Dr Thomas Edward Hanley (1839-1969) and his wife Tulla Innes Hanley (Mrs T. E. Hanley) (d. 1992) ;
  • 1969: given by Mrs Hanley as part of 'The T. Edward and Tullah Hanley Memorial Gift to the People of Denver and the Area', to the Denver Art Museum.
