It was drawn in charcoal. Whistler's smudging of pastel was marred by the large bits of wood to left of her head and at her knee. His tentative drawing was further blurred by the rubbing.

A girl in a red cap [M.1468] and A girl in a green cap and white tunic [M.1469] are similar in colour, technique and paper.
