Detail from The Canal, Amsterdam, 1889, James McNeill Whistler, The Hunterian, University of Glasgow

Scene in the Market, Algiers

Provenance

  • 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death, and bequeathed to his ward and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
  • 1955: sold on 26 October to Colnaghi's, London art dealers;
  • 1957: sold to a private collector, 17 April, but returned on 21 December 1958;
  • 1959: sold to another collector on 16 January.
  • 1967-1970: with A. D'Offay, London art dealer;
  • 1971: exhibited by the Fine Art Society, London.
  • 1991: bought from a collector in Providence, RI, by a collector in Massachusetts.

It is possible this provenance is slightly misleading, and that it should incorporate the history of Scene in the market, Algiers [M.1645] in the period of 1955/1957.

For further details see MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 1646).

Exhibitions

It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
