A head and bust portrait of a woman, in vertical format. She is in three-quarter view, turned slightly to her left, but looks at the viewer. She has black hair parted in the middle, and a black shawl over a dark pink or purple dress.

Sitter

Carmen Rossi (b. ca 1878 . She modelled for Whistler when young and again in the late 1890s. By September 1898 she was established as proprietor of the Académie Carmen at No. 6 Passage Stanislas, Paris, and they were in frequent contact until the Académie closed in 1901.
