Portrait of Jerome Elwell was being painted in 1900 and may have been continued in the following years, 1901-1902. 1

Elizabeth Robins Pennell (1855-1936) saw D. Jerome Elwell (1847-1912) sitting to Whistler on 5 August 1900. 2 In 1902 Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) of Detroit saw the portrait of ‘Mr Elwell the artist’ in Whistler’s London studio. 3
