St Petersburg Sketchbook dates from between 1844 and 1848, the majority of drawings being done in Russia 1844/1845, and some, like the drawing illustrated above, labelled with Russian words.
Several studies (pp. 13, 27, 37-8) were drawn by Charles Sillem Lidderdale (1831-1895), and one (p. 23) by Whistler's tutor, Alexander Osipovich Koritsky (1818-1866), after a portrait by the history painter Alexandre Pavlovitch Brioullov (1799-1852), professor at the Academie des Beaux Arts.
The sketchbook is catalogued fully in MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 7).
