Technique

Deborah Haden with her baby Annie, The Hunterian

It was drawn first with a fine nib, with a lot of curving lines (which emphasize the chubbiness of the baby) and zigzag shading. These lines were then reinforced with a broader nib and darker ink. Very fine diagonal lines shade the woman's face. A few crude dabs of white highlight her cheek and hand, and the bay's legs.

Conservation History

The elliptical frame was first drawn in pencil and pen and then cut out.
