A Man in a hat

Provenance

  • 1854: probably given to Whistler's aunt, Catherine Jane Palmer (1812-1877), Stonington, CT;
  • 1877: probably inherited by Mrs Palmer's son, Donald MacNeill Palmer (1845-1928) and his wife Annie Elizabeth Palmer (1849-1933);
  • 1933: the Palmer house in Stonington was inherited by Lillian McNeill Palmer (1871-1961), who found the drawing in a trunk in the attic;
  • 1936: sold to Elizabeth Robins Pennell (1855-1936) and given to the Library of Congress.

See further details in MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 178); the record has been revised.

Exhibitions

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
