Provenance

• 1880s: said to have been given by Whistler to Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) ;
• Before 1900: said to have been given by Wilde to Mrs Ada Esther Leverson, née Beddington (1862-1933).
• 1911: sold at auction, Sotheby's, London, 27 November 1911 (lot 252) as a 'drawing in chalk of three female figures' and bought by 'Davidson';
• 1912: owned by H. E. Morgan. 1

Whistler was in communication with Wilde between 1881 and 1890. The 1911 sale catalogue records the provenance noted above, but there is no other proof of it.
