Provenance

  • Date unknown: at some time in Paris (label, B. Pénaud, Lazetier, Emballeur, 4 Rue Favart 4).
  • 1903: with William Stephen Marchant (1868-1925), London dealer;
  • By 1904: owned by James Staats Forbes (1823-1904) ;
  • 1904: on 7 June, Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) , Detroit, left a successful bid with Marchant for 14 drawings from the Forbes collection;
  • 1919: bequeathed by Freer to the Freer Gallery of Art.

  • 1874: possibly Mr Whistler's Exhibition, Flemish Gallery, 48 Pall Mall, London, 1874 (cat. no. 12) as 'Seated Figure', priced at 10 gns.
  • 1903: Watercolours, Pastels, Drawings in Black and White, Sculptures and Bronzes By British and Foreign Artists Including A Selection of Works by H. B. Brabazon, and A Group of Works by the late James McNeill Whistler, W. Marchant & Co., Goupil Gallery, London, 1903 (cat. no. 178) and 1904 (cat. no. 3) as 'Le Goûter du Modèle'.
  • 1904: Pictures presented to the City of Dublin to form the Nucleus of a Gallery of Modern Art, also pictures lent by the executors of the late James Staats Forbes and others, Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, 1904 (cat. no. 252) as 'Female Figure Seated' or (cat. no. 259) as 'A Model of Japan'.
  • : Memorial Exhibition of the Works of the late James McNeill Whistler, First President of The International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers, New Gallery, Regent Street, London, 1905 (cat. no. 389) as "Japanese Figure, Seated'.
