Provenance

  • By 1899: owned by John James Cowan (1846-1936) , Edinburgh;
  • 1899: two crayon sketches of nude figures were bought from Cowan on 19 June by Agnew's, London art dealers (#2824);
  • 1899: sold on 20 June to Edmund Davis (1861-1939) , London, who owned it until at least 1904.
  • 1943: bequeathed by Grenville Lindell Winthrop (1864-1943) to the Fogg Art Museum.

Exhibitions

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
